First of all, a 5'3 person can play in back row or setter so I would totally go for it! if you practice enough during the summer, you could have as much of a chance of making the team as all the other girls. Skills are different for different volleyball teams but here are some things you could work on in order to be prepared for the volleyball team next year:

1) Bumping/Passing
When you bump a volleyball, you want your legs to absorb the pressure rather than swinging so when you are getting ready to pass the ball, try a squatting position like this. http://academics.uww.edu/cni/webquest/PE… Even though your legs are bent, it is important to move to the ball. Both of your arms should be together when you pass and you shouldn't bend at your elbows. I would do some squats every day to build up your muscles if you're planning on playing back row.

2) Setting
This isn't as important as some of your other skills unless you are setter. When you set, you want to make an almost triangle-shaped form with your hands like this http://blog.mlive.com/broncos_impact/200… For practice with setting, try finding a wall and standing close to it. Toss the volleyball up against the wall and let it bounce back and fourth between the wall and your hands. ALSO it is very important, when you are setting, that your feet do not come off of the ground. Like bumping, you can bend your legs to make the ball go farther.

3) Hitting/Spiking
The first thing you need to know about hitting a volleyball is the approach. You want to step back a ways away from the net and "hop" with your left foot straight towards the net, as if your were jumping over something then do a quick right-left and land parallel to the net. Your arms should go back behind you as you jump with your left foot. Then your left arm should be fully extended and your hand should be aimed at the volleyball. Your right hand/arm should be drawn farther back, almost to your ear until the volleyball is within reach. Then you should drop your left arm back down to your side and swing all the way through with your right arm and snap your wrist to make the ball go down.

4) BASIC Rules and Helpful Hints
If you want to be on the team, you should learn all the basic rules of the game. There are only 3 hits on a side. Typically, back row people will recieve a serve and pass the ball to the setter who will then set up the front row hitters. If you are playing back row and you think that the ball is going out, follow it to the line to make sure its out before calling it.

I would most definately try out next year for the volleyball team especially if it is something that you're willing to work at. GoodLuck!! :)

From having the experience of playing volleyball all through high school I would say that joining the team your sophomore year wouldn't give you a huge chance of making the team. If you have never played before you probably don't have all the skills that the rest of the team have accumulated in past years of playing. I know this sucks, but you probably being on the bigger side and so short won't increase your chances as well. If you were to make the team you would probably be a D.S (defensive specialist) which is just playing the back row and "bumping" or passing the ball to the setter. Hope this helps, and girl if you want to be a volleyball player go for it! Just have fun! :)
