The serial number can be found out either buy painting the filed area with nitric acid or having it X-rayed....the compressed steel will leave the numbers some what intact

What did you do to piss him off? Simple possession of a firearm with an altered or obliterated serial number is a Federal crime. Do not "turn it in to the police", as they'd be obligated to lock you up. Your best bet is to either melt it down into a puddle of metal or chunk it in the nearest river, and never mention it again. Better yet, give it back to him and deny you ever saw it. By posting this on a public forum, law enforcement can track you down. You best tell them it was a trick question you posted on YA just to see what kind of answer you would get, and the gun never really existed. It is ILLEGAL to own any firearm which HAS it serial number filed off. This is true everywhere in the U.S. It IS legal to own a firearm manufactured before 1968 WITHOUT a serial number , since this was NOT required before the Gun Control Act of 1968.
