How do I tighten up my handgun groupings?

Ive recently been shooting my new Springfield 1911 but Im flinching with it and am getting horrible groupings (4in-8in) at 15yds un-benched. All my life, Ive shot Kahrs, Glocks, HKs etc. Im just finding the recoil of the all steel 45 1911 a little hard handle, because I just don't have that recoil absorption with plastic lower framed handguns (not to mention the recoil buffer on the Hk's).

Any advice would be great, its embarrassing because Im a pretty big guy and the 1911 is probably one of the most accurate/best handguns of all time. Oh, and don't say "don't use it" or "stick with a different cal", I have a hard on for 1911's and I intend to stick with it. My lack of accuracy could also be from not practicing as much, with the economy and all, I can only go once a month. : (...
