Open Question
If Paul Williams can fight Pacquiao at 147, how is that considered "unfair?"?
I have seen this proposed match up everywhere, on boxing sites and boxing magazines - people talking about how "Oh, this would be a gross mismatch" or that "P-Will needs to fight someone his own size", etc., etc.
Never mind the fact that Williams is 6 foot 1 inch tall, compared to Pacquiao's height of 5 foot 6 and a half inches tall, or that Williams has an 82(!) inch wingspan (compared to 68 inches for Pacquiao).
If Williams can make 147 pounds like he claims, then he can fight at 147. If Williams can make 135, he can fight at 135 (The way Ali Funeka does).
My question is, why are so many people saying this wouldn't be a fair fight? They're both going to be at 147 pounds, the same weight, what's wrong with that?
Also, contrary to what I've read, I feel the fight would be much closer than most fans think.

Answer Question
Ive read on Y sports that williams is at least 6'3" eventhough hes listed as 6'1" and he has the wingspan of a heavyweight.Heres why it would be unfair,Paquiao can barely make the welterweight limit, paul is a middleweight.Pacquiao is a small welter,Williams is a middleweight, can probably go all the way up to lightheavy if he wanted to.Lets say williams was half the fighter manny is(skillwise, not saying he is)he could keep the Pacman at bay with just his jab and win by points.Weight classes were made to put fighters on an equal playing field, but we all know that some fighters come in way bigger at fight night,Antonio Tarver came in 22 pounds heavier at his last fight(rematch against Dawson).WILLIAMS IS TO BIG AND SHOULD PICK ON SOMEONE HIS OWN SIZES.

Paul is not like Shane Mosley who just outgrew the lightweights, barnstormed the welterweights and sidelined in the jr. middleweights where he was eventually proved to be relatively short not only in level of competitiveness but also in size, hence he went back to the welters..

answer: John B time: 2010-10-01 06:17:39For me that's not unfair. If the guy can make 147 pounds, then he is a welterweight. That's why there are divisions. As long as you can go rehydrate or dehydrate at the weight range of the division, then you can fight anyone in that division as well. Except that he actually holds many advantages against opponent smaller than he is. Can't blame smaller opponents for not wanting to fight him, can I?
But, if a person is a guy who criticizes Floyd Mayweather for picking smaller fighters to beat, then you will call this "unfair".
No prob.
