Plastic Bags for Ammo Storage?
I have a more than adequate system for storing ammo. GI cans in good shape (no rust, gasket intact), loaded with dessicant packs, stored off the ground in a climate controlled environment. My problem is that I need to optimize space. Currently, they are packed tightly with ammunition still in its original packaging. In most cases, this includes some kind of plastic spacer that takes up a lot of additional storage space.
I am not looking to mix and match brands (or even batches) by loosely storing them in a can. The obvious solution was to first store them in Ziplock bags, labeled, and then put them in the ammo cans. However, I'm concerned that the bags will capture and hold moisture. I don't have a vacuum sealer, and don't plan on buying one for this purpose. I've considered "poking holes" in the bags, but this sounds like a pretty poor option as I also hoped to make individual bundles more portable, and small holes tend to become large ones when pointy objects and higher weights come into play.
Do plastic bags actually trap moisture, or is that a myth/misconception? Does anyone else store their ammo in this fashion, and have they seen any problems with it? Is there some other solution that I'm just overlooking?
