Open Question

Thinking about learning to skateboard. Good brands for beginners?

Alright so I've been wanting to learn how to skateboard, but I don't even own a board so I figure that's the place to start right? Only I have NO clue what would be good for me. I really don't need some ultra fancy name brand top of the line board I just need a good quality board that can handle me falling and wont break into pieces.

Also I've been reading other peoples questions like this one and lots of people just say to go to a local skateboard shop and I know where one is, but I don't want to come in expecting to spend 50 dollars and end up spending 100 dollars. SO if your answer for me is to check out a local skateboard place can you at least give me some general price info?
