Open Question

What do you think about Federer's comments in the press after he lost to Nadal in Madrid?

He said after losing in Madrid to Nadal that his loss was irrelevant - that one can win the top clay events (like Nadal did), but if he loses early at the French his achievements become questionable. Had he won, he would have said it was an important victory against his main rival and he now feels very confident ahead of FO. His comments demeaned Nadal's huge win and clean sweep of all Clay Masters. What a sore loser!! Fortunately Nadal countered by saying the clay season cannot be decided by one tournament.

Federer could have said he liked that it was a close match and will try to do better at the French. He says nice things during the ceremony and then blasts his opponent in the press. Federer has similarly been disrespectful towards his opponents' wins in the past. He also recently said, regarding Nadal, that you don't have to be an all-around player to win on clay, just have strong legs and good groundstrokes. But, we all know that Nadal has improved many aspects of his game, such as his flat and slice backhand, his volleys and his serve. It is evident that Federer is bitter at his big losing record against his rival, but he should keep it to himself and not make such public remarks.

I used to really like Federer (he was my favourite until recently), but I'm now finding it more and more difficult to support him, even with his sublime game. I'm not even a Nadal fan - I just don't like to see any player, especially one who earned his place among the best, being knocked down like that.
