What is a Martial Art where I can learn how to defend myself?

I live in a not so nice neighborhood and I seem to get jumped by wannabe gangsters or I get cococt in the face. Im looking for something where I can learn how to defend myself in a fight such as punching and blocking, choke holds n stuff. Possibly be able to protect myself but get the person down. Possbbily without having to punch back with a simple move and thats it... like self defence..
