Aloha Chandler, Sorry brother you shouldn't start on the north sore (North Shore) I live here on Oahu and I been surfing off and on now for over 30 years and it's not only is a question that if you where capable of doing (riding 30s) you would know but is a question that No one will answer. I ride over head waves in Cali and South Shore but when the west or north are bangin I wont go out over head high cuz the waves are harder faster and the reef is a lot shallower so even if you are riding over head in HB or NP it's not the same wave brother.SDG

Unfortunately my friend, if you have to ask that question on YA Surfing, you are no where near ready to surf any waves, let alone 10 to 30 foot waves. Rent a board while you take some lessons. Learn the basics on nice thigh high waves. Then think about talking to the folks in a good local surf shop about buying a nice board.
